Maston, meanwhile, Barbicane finds the solution to the problem of surviving the incredible acceleration that the explosion would cause. Ardan suggests that Barbicane and Nicholl travel with him in the projectile, in the end, the projectile is successfully launched, but the destinies of the three astronauts are left inconclusive. The sequel, Around the Moon, deals with what happens to the three men in their travel from the earth to the moon, in his publication on space travel, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky refuted Vernes idea of using a cannon for space travel.
He concluded that a gun would have to be impossibly long, the gun in the story would subject the payload to about 22, g of acceleration. However, he was inspired by the story and developed the theory of spaceflight. Gerald Bull and the Project HARP proved after that a cannon can shoot a kg projectile to an altitude of kilometres, additionally, during the Plumbbob nuclear test series, a kg capping plate made of steel was blasted away and never found.

It has been speculated that the plate entered outer space because its speed was estimated to be two and six times the escape velocity, but engineers believe it melted in the atmosphere. Some of the issues are, The projectile is launched using a large gun, of course, the largest issue is the resulting acceleration, which is well above the survivable limit for humans.
The space capsule also performs a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on the return trip, Verne did not consider using a rocket as the main propulsion method although some small retro-rockets were carried onboard to be used to soften the landing on the Moon. Liquid propellants were invented even later and these modern propellants offer much higher specific impulse than black powder.
The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth, the genre of subterranean fiction already existed long before Verne.
However, the present book considerably added to its popularity and influenced later such writings, for example, Edgar Rice Burroughs explicitly acknowledged Vernes influence on his own Pellucidar series. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a note written in runic script along with the name of a 16th-century Icelandic alchemist.
Lidenbrock and Axel transliterate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code, Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher, but his results are as meaningless as the original. Professor Lidenbrock decides to lock everyone in the house and force himself, Axel discovers the answer when fanning himself with the deciphered text, Lidenbrocks decipherment was correct, and only needs to be read backwards to reveal sentences written in rough Latin.
In what Axel calls bad Latin, the message reads, In Snefflls Iokulis kraterem kem delibat umbra Skartaris Iulii intra kalendas deskende, audas uiator. In slightly better Latin, with errors amended, In Sneffels Jokulis craterem, quem delibat umbra Scartaris, Julii intra kalendas descende, audax viator, et terrestre centrum attinges, quod feci. Arne Saknussemm Professor Lidenbrock is a man of astonishing impatience, and departs for Iceland immediately, taking his reluctant nephew with him.
According to Saknussemms message, the passage to the center of the Earth is through the one crater that is touched by the shadow of a mountain peak at noon. However, the text states that this is only true during the last days of June. During the next few days, with July rapidly approaching, the weather is too cloudy for any shadows, alas for Axel, however, on the second to last day, the sun comes out and the mountain peak shows the correct crater to take. After taking a turn, they run out of water and Axel almost dies. Lidenbrock and Axel name the resulting stream the Hansbach in his honour, at another point, Axel becomes separated from the others and is lost several miles from them.
Luckily, an acoustic phenomenon allows him to communicate with them from some miles away. After descending many miles, following the course of the Hansbach, the travelers build a raft out of trees and set sail. The Professor names this sea the Lidenbrock Sea, while on the water, they see several prehistoric creatures such as a giant Ichthyosaurus, which fights with a Plesiosaurus and wins.
Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision, very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club.
